☕️ Coffee Roast Levels Explained — From City to French (light to dark).
Not all dark coffees are the same 👀
Here’s your quick guide to roast levels you’ll actually see on specialty bags 👇
🌆 City Roast
• Light–medium brown
• Bright acidity, light body
• Flavor: toasted grain, mild sweetness
• Highlights origin flavors
🌇 City+ Roast
• Slightly darker than City
• Balanced acidity and body
• Flavor: caramel notes begin to develop
🏙️ Full City Roast
• Medium-dark brown
• Oils just starting to appear
• Flavor: chocolatey, richer body, less acidity
🌃 Full City+ Roast
• Darker, approaching dark roast
• Noticeable oils on surface
• Flavor: bittersweet, deeper caramel, slight smokiness
🔥 French Roast
• Very dark, shiny black beans
• Low acidity, heavy body
• Flavor: bold, smoky, roasted (origin flavors mostly gone)
💡 Fun fact: As you go darker, you lose origin flavors and gain roast-driven taste.
